KC101 (WDKC Covington) has been the area’s Hometown Country Station for over 20 years. The station is completely locally owned and operated with offices in Liberty, Pennsylvania. Our signal broadcasts on 101.5fm and 97.1fm.
I began my KC101 adventure back in 2012. How does one become a on-air radio personality? Well, I hate to tell anyone who has been working hard at their dreams of being in broadcasting, but I got into radio completely by accident. It’s true that I have done deejay, emcee and other entertainment work since the 90’s, but that had absolutely nothing to do with it. I was literally at the right place at the right time when the owner of the station asked if I had ever considered being on the radio. At that point, I had honestly never thought about it.
Like everyone else, I started doing overnights a few days a week. I did it because it was interesting and fun, and would make for great stories when I am very old. Years later, I have a regular show 7 days a week including the flagship program: The Sunday Night Oldies. Being a radio host offers other opportunities as well. Every year I am the live host for the truck and tractor pulls and the demolition derby at the Tioga County Fair. I attend concerts and promotional events (limo rides and free beer aren’t bad things) – my favorite (of course) being media premiers for things like Tagsylvania haunted attractions at Halloween time.
One thing I often talk about that a lot of people probably don’t consider is HOW you do a radio show. I am not referring to the technical aspects (although I am well versed in audio technology). What I mean is that I am literally sitting in a room by myself talking to myself. Sure, thousands of people are listening, but I don’t SEE them. Just the monitor…or the soundboard..or the wall. As many new deejays have told me, it’s not as easy as it seems. I really enjoy the Oldies show, because I usually have at least one guest in the studio with me.
Coincidentally, one of my favorite television shows of all time is Frasier. If you aren’t familiar, Dr. Frasier Crane has a talk radio show 3 hours a day on an AM station in Seattle. No big deal right? Somehow that gig pays him enough to afford a huge luxury condo, full time healthcare for his father, BMW, the finest clothes and food – and he is at work 15 hours a week. Sure, he has degrees from both Harvard and Oxford, but he just listens to callers complain for a few minutes and then hangs up on them. I could be Frasier, haha.
