Happy Mother`s Day to all you mothers out there! While the celebration of motherhood has been going on all over the world for thousands of years, the holiday as we know it in the U.S. has only been around since 1907.
The very first modern Mother`s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
By 1911, the holiday was observed in every U.S. State, of which there were only 46 at the time. President Woodrow Wilson made Mother`s Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May back in 1914.
Mother`s Day is purposely written in the singular possessive to signify celebrating one`s own individual mother, as opposed to Mothers`, which would infer all the mothers in the world.
It wasn`t long before greeting card companies, florists, and candy manufacturers turned the second Sunday in May into a commercial event. Jarvis was against this, and held protests in Philadelphia in 1923 at a candy makers` convention.
If you are able to, and haven`t done so... call your mom!
