To get from Philadelphia to Jersey Shore you obviously travel east, right? Not so fast. Pennsylvania is much more confusing than that.
Almost everyone is familiar with the Jersey Shore. Either because of MTV, or simple geographical logic. New Jersey`s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gives it about 141 miles of coastline.
There is actually a Jersey Shore in Pennsylvania, and it is over 100 miles from where you would think. Located southwest of Williamsport in Lycoming County, our Jersey Shore`s story goes back to the 1700`s.
Back in George Washington times, some guys from New Jersey settled on the west bank of the west branch of the Susquehanna River at a place that would be called Waynesburg.
Soon some other guys (not from New Jersey) set up on the east bank, and referred their rivals as \"The Jersey Shore\". This name stuck, and was officially incorporated in 1826.
Pennsylvania`s Jersey Shore is less than an hour from where I live, and to the unfamiliar, it can be confusing. Most people understandably assume you mean the coast of New Jersey when you reference Jersey Shore.
Bonus fun fact: Jersey Shore, PA is the southern terminus of the 65-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail, most of which I have ridden myself.
