I probably haven`t purchased whole milk on purpose in my entire life, and there`s no good reason for it. It turns out that whole milk really isn`t that bad, and I feel kind of silly that I never bothered to realize that until now.
When I was a kid, my mom bought skim milk. She never bought cereal with sugar, real iced tea, or real soda - so my childhood was pretty bland in that department. As an adult, I always get 2% milk because... well there really isn`t a good reason.
One cup of 2% has 120 calories and 5 grams of fat. Surely this is much healthier than drinking whole milk, right? Not really.
The same one cup portion of whole milk has 149 calories and 8 grams of fat. Obviously those numbers are higher, but I was expecting them to be considerably so.
If you are trying to cut calories and/or fat wherever you can, not drinking whole milk might be a good idea. I was surprised to find out that sacrificing flavor or consistency (like when you use milk in cooking) doesn`t really save you a whole lot in calories.
I actually don`t drink milk myself, but I do use it in coffee and cooking, and I think whole milk might be the way to go in those cases.
