The first season of Deep Space Nine had only 20 episodes, and the season finale is tied directly to the events of the the first episode… and the second. This opens up a whole can of worms as to who will be the next Kai (like the Pope – if it was the Middle Ages on Earth), the position of The Emissary in Bajoran culture, and who is a murderer?
